Be aware that all contractors doing work that totals $600.00 or more for labor
and materials must have a State of Michigan license. Ask to see their license. They should also carry
Worker's Compensation AND Liability insurance. Ask to see their insurance certificates.
Ask friends, or the home builders association for a list of builders. Get a list of references from the
builders. Call the references and ask them specific questions. How is the quality of work? Were they
on time? How is their service? Would you hire them again?
Get estimates, but remember that the quality of materials will affect the final price. A low bid
using inferior products may not be a bargain. Talk about their warranty and what kind of service
you will receive after the completion of your project.
Get all agreements in writing: Contract, Proposal, Change Orders. etc. Don't be afraid to ask
questions about anything you don't understand. The Proposal / Contract should contain the company
name, address and phone number. It should give detailed job specifications that include: a description,
brand name, colors, grades, styles, etc. of materials. A list of all costs should be spelled out
clearly, and what may not be included in the final price. The terms of payment should also be
clearly stated.
